The Giro crosses the Strait of Messina without pausing and starts its run up the peninsula. This will be another day for the sprinters, after they didn't get much chance to express themselves in Sicily. The route covers almost the entire length of the Calabria Tyrrhenian coast along Statale 18, passing through Diamante and Scalea: but the racers won't be able to enjoy the scenery. The finishing line will be the same as the one which saw Diego Ulissi's victory in 2016. This time, victory should be won by a pure sprinter.
