Lithium battery

There are three types, from the most common to high performance batteries.

Lithium-ion battery. The most common, long-lasting, charges quickly and does not suffer from memory effect (when a battery seems to consider the last charge level, whatever it may be, as the low battery level).

Cost? High.

Lithium polymer battery: a solid, strong and mechanically flexible battery. It recharges quickly and lasts a long time. It is not widely used as it is latest generation, and therefore more expensive.

Lithium metal battery: has the highest performance, but is made from a very reactive material, which can ignite when in contact with air.

LEAD BATTERY

The first on the market: costs little but offers lower performance than other technologies, starting with long charging times.

The battery is heavy and contain acids that are harmful to health. It is also very sensitive to temperature and should never be fully discharged.

On average, a lead acid battery provides around 300 discharge cycles before becoming unusable.

NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERY (NI-CD)

Lighter than lead batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries recharge faster and last longer (about 800 to 1000 cycles).

Cadmium, however, is a toxic material, and the management of used or exhausted batteries can be quite critical. In addition, Ni-Cd batteries suffer from memory effect and seem to consider the last charge, whatever it may be, as the low battery level, reducing the durability and performance of the battery.

NICKEL-METAL HYDRIDE BATTERY (NI-MH)

More recent than nickel-cadmium batteries, lighter and with a longer life (over 1,000 cycles).

Despite this, however, Ni-MH batteries lose their charge faster, are sensitive to high temperatures and are particularly costly, because they contain rare materials.

SODIUM-NICKEL CHLORIDE BATTERY

Widely used for military purposes, particularly in submarines. They are light, recharge quickly and can last for years.

They only operate at high temperatures (about 300°C) and therefore can only be used on very large vehicles.

The costs are high but the technology of these batteries could prove vital for heavy transport, public transport and vehicles with frequent use (because they discharge completely in a few days).

OTHER TYPES OF BATTERY

Nickel-zinc battery (Ni-Zn).
Excellent, with performance similar to Ni-Cd batteries. Unfortunately they arrived late on the market and have not enjoyed great commercial success.

Vanadium redox battery.
Its strength lies in electrodes that do not degrade, thanks to the liquid state of the vanadium (the material that oxidises or reduces).
The technology is promising, but is still at a prototype stage, also due to its size.

Metal-oxygen battery.
It consists predominantly of zinc, but also contains iron, magnesium or aluminium. Reliable, light, cheap, but only used in the military.
It is not rechargeable, which makes it less suitable for use in vehicles.

OTHER METHODS FOR STORING ENERGY.

Supercapacitors.
Supercapacitors offer much higher performance than traditional capacitors, and they charge and discharge very quickly.
For now, they are not an alternative to batteries, due to their costs and lower energy density.
