Electric Car Charging Connectors

TYPE 1 CONNECTOR

North American and Japanese standard, only for Mode 3 single-phase charging with alternating current, for a maximum charging capacity of about 7.3 kW, with a 32A maximum current and a voltage of 230V.
 

Type 1 has 5 contacts:

  • 3 power contacts: L1 (phase), N (neutral), PE (earth)
  • 2 communication contacts: PP (proximity), PC (pilot control)
This connector has been developed in accordance with International SAE J1772/2009 specifications, the North American standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles maintained by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

TYPE 2 CONNECTOR

Most public charging stations (pole stations) in Italy are fitted with type 2 and 3 sockets. This type is used for charging with single-phase or three-phase alternating current (AC), with a maximum power of 43 kW.

 
ACEA (the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) has named type 2 as a possible European standard, proposing 2017 as the deadline by which all newly built vehicles must include it.
 

The Type 2 connector has 7 contacts:

  • 5 power contacts: L1 (phase), L2 (phase), L3 (phase), N (neutral), PE (earth)
  • 2 communication contacts: PP (proximity), PC (pilot control)
In addition, the type 2 connector has a safety mechanism that disconnects the power from all the contacts when they not connected to both sockets (on the vehicle and the infrastructure).
 
The socket has a locking mechanism to prevent accidental interruption of charging.
 
This connector was developed based on the specifications of the VDE-AR-E 2623 international standard issued by VDE (a German association for electrical, electronic and computer technologies).

Type 3 connector

Most public charging stations (pole stations) in Italy are fitted with type 2 and 3 sockets. This connector was developed based on the specifications of the IEC 62196-2 international standard and comes in two versions: 3C and 3A.

 

The three-phase 3C version, widely used in France, has 7 contacts:

  • 4 active conductors
  • 1 for earth
  • 2 auxiliaries for control functions (pilot contacts) offer additional safeguards through integrated shutters that ensure a high level of protection

The 3A version, widely used in Italy, has 4 contacts:

  • 3 power contacts: L1 (phase), N (neutral), PE (earth)
  • 1 communication contact: PC (pilot control)
This connector has a 16 A single-phase supply A and a maximum power of about 3 kW (it is used mainly for the charging needs of light vehicles with an on-board battery charger).

THE CHADEMO CONNECTOR

This is the standard for fast charging with direct current, designed in Japan and then adopted throughout the world. It can deliver up to 50 kW of high voltage (500 V) direct current at 125 A, with connectors designed to support up to 100 kW of power.

 

The plug has 10 pins, with the following functions:

  • power supply with positive and negative
  • earth line
  • proximity circuit
  • 2 communication pins
  • data transmission and control channel
With direct current (DC) charging, the cable is always attached to the charging station, and therefore there are no sockets on the charging station side.
 
In addition, vehicles with a CHAdeMO connector also have a second separate connector for charging with alternating current at lower powers.

Connettore Combo 2

This is a connector used for charging with direct current (DC) that can handle charging power of over 100 kW and is adopted by several car manufacturers.

The Combo type 2 connector (850 V/200 A) incorporates the Type 2 connector for alternating current charging with no need for a second socket in the car.

With direct current (DC) charging, the cable is always attached to the charging station, and therefore there are no sockets on the charging station side.
