Electric cars in Italy: 2025 starts strong, but growth needs solid foundations
The electric car market in Italy regained momentum in 2025. After a 2024 marked by a drop in sales, the first months of the new year show that numbers are clearly on the rise. But is this growth really going to last? Let’s take a look at what is working, where targeted interventions are needed, and what to expect in the coming months.
Electric car market 2025 in Italy: first half year +75%.
In the period January-March 2025, battery electric car (BEV) registrations reached 23,019 units, an increase of 75.4% compared to the same period in 2024 (source: Affaritaliani.it). Driving the growth is a combination of targeted incentives, expansion of supply and increased environmental awareness among consumers.
- January: 6,721 units (+132.2% compared to January 2024)
- February: 6,980 units (market share stable at 5%)
- March: 9,373 units (+77.7% compared to March 2024)
Best-selling BEV models
Alongside the Tesla Model 3, which retains the lead in sales, new proposals are emerging that are finding their way onto the market. This is the case with the Citroën e-C3 and the Dacia Spring, which offer a more compact electric solution designed for urban and everyday use.
In addition, BYD also registered several electric vehicles in Italy in the first quarter of 2025, achieving a market share of 9.4% in this segment. The manufacturer, in fact, in the absence of Italian state incentives for 2025, has introduced private promotions positioning itself as a competitive alternative to traditional brands.
City Car
City cars continue to dominate the electric car market in Italy, thanks to their urban practicality and low cost. Models such as the Dacia Spring (1,421 units), the Citroën e-C3 (1,082 units) and the Fiat 500e (446 units) are among the best-selling .InsideEVs Italia+3InsideEVs Italia+3newsauto.it+3

SUV/Crossover

This distribution shows a preference among Italians for compact, practical electric vehicles for urban use, with an increasing focus on more spacious, versatile models such as SUVs and crossovers.
Charging infrastructure and awareness: the strengths
Besides the expansion of the available range, there are other elements that are supporting the recovery:
Growth in charging networks, with more accessible points across the territory
Regional initiatives rewarding the electric choice with local subsidies
What to expect in the coming months
Globally, more than 15 million electric vehicles are expected to be sold in 2025, an increase of 29.9% compared to 2024 (source: InsideEVs Italia). In Italy, the priority will be to maintain the pace of growth, even after the incentives have run out, and to expand the charging network in underserved areas.
The year 2025 could be a turning point for the electric car in Italy. The positive signs are there, but turning this recovery into structural growth will require targeted investments, comprehensive infrastructure and policies that look to the long term. Only then can electric mobility become a truly stable and widespread choice.
