Smart meters do not just display numbers: they provide useful information to understand how and when you consume Energy. Thanks to their ability to monitor in real time how much Energy is used and when, smart meters offer a valuable tool to identify waste, choose the most suitable Power tariff for your habits and plan consumption more efficiently.

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter, also known as a 2G meter, is an electronic device that records Energy consumption digitally every 15 minutes and automatically transmits the data to the distributor, which makes it available to the supplier.

Unlike older analogue models, which required manual reading and only provided cumulative data, smart meters allow automatic and accurate readings, offering greater transparency on the amount of Energy consumed in relation to electricity consumption time bands.

How are consumption data read?

To view Energy consumption, simply press the meter reading button: different information will appear in sequence on the display, from the customer code to the active time band. Among these, the most useful to understand the Energy you are using are:

  • Instant consumption (real-time withdrawal reading): indicates the active power drawn in real time, therefore the amount of electricity you are using at the moment of reading. It is expressed in kilowatts (kW) and is useful to understand whether an appliance is consuming too much Energy;

  • Total consumption (current period reading): it is the cumulative sum of kilowatt-hours (kWh) used up to the moment of reading, often broken down by billing periods or time bands;

  • Consumption time bands: the meter can indicate the time band in use at that moment and can record consumption by dividing it into the three bands F1, F2, F3.

Optimising your bill with a smart meter

Meter data also helps you understand when consumption occurs and where it is concentrated, becoming useful to reduce your bill. But what advantages does the 2G meter offer to optimise your bill costs?

Consumption with 15-minute detail

Thanks to the detection of consumption data every 15 minutes, you can access increasingly up-to-date information, almost in real time, useful for understanding how and when you use electricity. Such a detailed view allows you to monitor your consumption habits, identify any waste and plan Energy withdrawals with a focus on saving and convenience.

Smart Energy management

One of the major innovations of the 2G meter is the adoption of the standardized communication protocol known as “Chain 2”, which offers you a dedicated communication channel and enables the development and diffusion of smart devices for Energy management and home automation. Thanks to this technology, the meter communicates with appliances and allows you to automate Energy consumption, reduce peaks and further improve Energy efficiency at home.
