How to pay MAV and RAV online
Within the complex Italian financial system, MAV and RAV slips are key instruments for facilitating transactions and payments.
But what do MAV and RAV mean? How are they different from ordinary bill payment slips?
In this article we will try to answer users’ most frequently asked questions and explain what they are used for. We will look at the main distinctions between the MAV and the RAV payment slips and how they can be paid online, quickly and easily, without standing in long queues at counters.
What is a MAV payment slip?
A MAV (abbreviation for “Pagamento Mediante Avviso” - Payment By Notice) is a bank slip, created to facilitate remote payments. MAVs are mainly used for the payment of condominium instalments, school fees, insurance premiums and pension contributions, but also for mortgage and loan instalments.
The payment process follows a standard interbank procedure: the debtor receives the MAV slip and uses it to make the payment, guaranteeing themselves a fast, secure transaction.
What makes the MAV unique is its 17-digit identification code, which ensures unequivocal tracking of the transaction. In addition to the code and the amount to be paid, the MAV slip provides information to uniquely identify the payer, the reason for the payment, and the due date by which the payment is to be made.
The MAV slip is a payment method mainly chosen by public bodies, including Italian universities, for fee collection. It is also used by condominium administrators because the MAV allows them to collect condominium fees on a regular basis.
What is a RAV payment slip?
The RAV slip, an acronym for “Ruoli Mediante Avviso” - Special Payment Slip), is the means used to make payments of amounts issued by collection agencies in Italy. This means is used to settle various types of payments, such as taxes for government concessions, professional registration, and tax collection.
But what do we mean by sums issued by collection agencies? When a person owes a debt to a public body, the sums found to be due are entered in the register for collection agencies. The register is a list containing the names of the debtors, the type of claim and the amounts owed. This is drawn up by the creditor and forwarded to the Revenue-Collection Agency, which then processes and serves the payment slip for the purpose of collecting the amounts. For example, the payment documents issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate Riscossione also contain pre-filled RAV slips, together with the relevant instructions, to facilitate payment by the due date, thus reducing the risk of errors.
Collection via RAV slips can take place in two main ways:
- enforced collection, applied in the event of non-payment of contributions or taxes;
- spontaneous collection, when the user pays sums due in the ordinary way, such as professional membership fees.
