PUN and PUN Index GME
The PUN (short for Prezzo Unico Nazionale, or National Single Price) is the wholesale reference price for electricity purchased on the Italian Electricity Market.
As of January 1, 2025, the PUN has been replaced by the PUN Index GME, which is the weighted average of electricity prices in different areas of Italy. This index takes into account the quantities of energy sold and the time-of-use periods.
This change, established by the Ministerial Decree of the MASE (Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security) on April 18, 2024, aims to make the energy system more efficient and better aligned with local production and consumption dynamics.
What changes with the PUN Index GME?
This evolution marks a new chapter in the regulation of the Italian energy sector, significantly impacting electricity dispatching, market organization, and competition.
For consumers, this change brings greater transparency and the opportunity to benefit from tariffs that more accurately reflect local conditions.
Key changes:
- Zonal prices: The new index is calculated as a weighted average of hourly zonal prices, reflecting the specific demand and supply conditions in different geographic areas of the country. Each region will therefore have its own PUN Index GME.
- Alignment with actual costs: This methodology allows for greater accuracy in price determination by considering the real costs of energy production and transportation in different zones.
- Incentive for energy efficiency: The system promotes more responsible consumer behavior by encouraging the optimization of energy consumption based on price fluctuations across different time slots and geographic areas.
- Alignment with European practices: The introduction of the PUN Index GME harmonizes the Italian market with standards used in other European countries, fostering greater integration and competitiveness at a continental level.
