The switch to electric mobility is no longer the future, it is already the present. Today there are already 17 million electric vehicles on the road worldwide, of which 6.5 million were sold in 2021 alone. And in Italy? Almost one in 10 cars registered in 2021 is electric (100% electric or plug-in hybrid) and compared to 2020 there was a doubling of registrations.

The world of car manufacturers continues to release and develop electric models, with ever greater range and at increasingly accessible prices. An electric car does not pollute, allows savings on fuel and maintenance, you can charge it anywhere, it can circulate freely in limited traffic areas and accesses car parks in historic centres free of charge.

What incentives do I have for installing electric charging stations?

To encourage electric vehicle owners to equip themselves with a home charging system, the State has provided for some incentives. By virtue of the 2019 Budget Law, access can be obtained to:

  • superbonus 110%: Decree-Law 34/2020 has provided, for all of 2022 and 2023, that the installation of electric charging stations for motor vehicles constitutes a driven intervention of the Superbonus 110%. This incentive can also be used in the years 2024 and 2025, but in this case the rates change: 70% in 2024 and 65% in 2025. The installation of the charging station, considered a driven intervention, must take place in combination with at least one of the so-called driving works, listed by the decree.

This incentive is recognised through the deduction of the expense from income tax in 4 annual instalments.

Why is it convenient to install an electric charging station at home?

The regulations in force neither oblige nor prevent charging the car through a normal domestic electrical socket, however this method is certainly not the best.

In fact, it is always preferable to use charging stations or a wallbox because they guarantee fast and conscious charging. These devices, in fact, allow your electric car to quickly absorb the maximum available power without tripping the meter and allow, depending on the model selected, also the choice of the best charging time slot and the complete remote management of the same, providing you with clear reports on the quantities of electricity supplied to the battery.

How to install an electric charging station?

At Home
In a Condominium

To create a home charging system in a detached house or a single-family villa, no authorisation is necessary. No permits are required either from the Municipality or from the Grid Operator. It is possible to charge the electric car by connecting it to the existing meter, so separate metering and therefore a new meter are not necessary.

 The most common installation process is followed by a specialised technician sent by the company from which the charging infrastructure is purchased. In general, you can proceed as follows:

  • Choice and purchase of the home charging device: there are two types: the electric charging station, that is, a sort of totem to be placed on the floor, and the wallbox, i.e. a charging point that is installed on the internal walls of the garage or outside the home;
  • Inspection by a specialised technician: the technician carries out all preventive measurements, checks the location of the electrical panel and identifies the best position for the charging device;
  • Payment of the balance of the quote and any additional costs for complex works;
  • Installation of the charging station or wallbox: carried out on the basis of the specifications of the home, the vehicle to be charged and the consumption habits previously verified.

For all those who live in a condominium and wish to install a charging device, it is necessary to distinguish between two situations:

  • if the charging point is to be positioned in a private part of the building for personal use (for example in the owned garage), no authorisations are necessary, provided that the safety regulations on electrical systems are complied with;
  • if the charging point is to be positioned in a common space (such as the condominium car park), it is mandatory to contact the condominium administrator to request the convening of the meeting and receive the consent of the majority of participants representing at least half of the value of the condominium. Generally, parking charging stations are used: installed outdoors, near squares and/or gardens. Furthermore, it must be put on record that all expenses will be borne exclusively by the condominium residents who own electric vehicles. In the event of lack of consent from the meeting, the individual condominium resident, within three months of the request made in writing, may in any case install the devices at their own expense, provided that the new system: does not damage the common parts, does not alter the safety and decorum of the building and does not hinder other co-owners in the use of the common parts.

How much does it cost to install a charging station for electric cars?

The costs of the charging system depend on the type of device purchased; for example, there are 3.7 kW models, typically suitable for cars with batteries with modest range or for plug-in hybrid vehicles, or higher-power systems, suitable for full-electric cars (BEV) that have batteries guaranteeing greater range. Furthermore, in some cases adaptation works of the electrical system may be necessary.

Electric charging stations and photovoltaic panels

When we choose to install a home charging device, it is advisable to make some considerations.  In fact, the environmental and economic benefits connected to the use of electric cars are maximised when the charging stations are powered by energy generated from renewable sources

Therefore, where possible, it is a good choice to install a small renewable energy production system at the same time, such as photovoltaic panels. To further optimise economic savings, it is advisable to also include a battery storage system, in order to charge the car even at times of low energy production (little sunlight).

Furthermore, it is possible to optimise the self-consumption of a photovoltaic system by opting for electric charging stations capable of automatically regulating the charging power required for the vehicle. So as to avoid unnecessary waste and save on the bill. In this case, the system must be equipped with adequate consumption measurement devices.
