What is Demand Side Management?

The Instantaneous Extraordinary Modulation Service (formerly Demand side management) is a defence programme for the national electricity grid promoted by Terna.

A pillar of the flexibility programmes in Italy for more than a decade is the Testo Integrato del Dispacciamento Elettrico (TIDE), in force since 1 January 2025.

Enel guides companies, through the strong operational and strategic support of its consortium, towards optimising their participation in Demand Side Management, ensuring advanced power auction management and extracting the maximum possible value from their industrial flexibility.

Remote Control

No need for customer intervention, modulation is managed remotely directly by Terna.
Scalability
A large part of the remuneration mechanism is guaranteed regardless of Terna's actual need for the service. Any interruptions generate additional revenues for the companies.
Consortium
Participating in consortia in the context of TIDE optimises resources and maximises earnings by taking advantage of the new market rules.

Who is the Target?

The demand side management service is aimed at all commercial and industrial customers connected to the high- or medium-voltage grid who meet the following requirements:

Power

The average monthly power must be greater than or equal to 1 MW per site.
Consumption
Annual electricity consumption must be at least 5.5 GWh.

Capacity Market

The Capacity Market is a key mechanism for ensuring the security of the electricity system, because it allows a reserve of energy to be created to cope with sudden peaks in demand.
